Do you know the signs that a youth may be experiencing housing issues? If not, then this blog post is for you. There are many reasons why youth homelessness occurs, but there are also some obvious signs to watch out for. This article will provide 5 of those signs so that you can better determine if your student needs help. The first sign that a student may be experiencing housing issues is if they are constantly missing school. Homeless youth often have to miss school in order to take care of personal business, such as finding food or a place to sleep. If your student is frequently absent from school, then there’s a good chance that they’re struggling with homelessness. Another sign that a youth may be homeless is if they’re not clean or well-groomed. When you don’t have a stable home, it can be hard to keep yourself clean and presentable. If your student doesn’t seem to care about their appearance, then it could be because they’re dealing with some tough realities. A youth may also be homeless if they’re using drugs or alcohol. Some youth turn to substance abuse when they are struggling with homelessness because it can help them cope with the situation that they are in. If you notice that your student is drinking more, then there’s a chance that their living conditions have changed. It’s important to watch out for signs of violence in youth who might be experiencing housing issues as well. A youth who turns violent against others could mean one of two things: either they don’t feel safe at home, or they feel like people will judge them based on how rough their life has been lately. Either way, if your student seems aggressive towards themselves or others, it’s time to reach out for help. The last sign that a youth may be homeless is if they seem withdrawn or depressed. Homeless youth often feel alone and ashamed of their situation. If your student seems like they don’t want to talk to anyone or be around people, then there’s a good chance that they’re struggling with housing issues. If you notice any of these signs in your student, it doesn’t mean that they are definitely experiencing homelessness – but it’s definitely worth reaching out to them and finding out more. The Empowerment Academy is a long-term housing facility in Owensboro, KY that works with students to set them up for success.
